 From Sri Lanka to Germany

MY NEW SCHOOL LIFE

Moving from Sri Lanka to Germany was like jumping into a completely different world. One day, I was in my comfy uniform at Gateway College Negombo, sweating under the tropical sun, and the next, I was in a German school, trying to figure out why NO ONE was wearing a uniform and why the teacher let students call them by their first names.

First Impressions – Where Is the Discipline?!

At Gateway, everything was SUPER STRICT. Teachers expected us to stand when they walked into the class, we had to wear polished shoes, and if you forgot your homework—GAME OVER. But in Germany? It’s like the Wild West! Students wear whatever they want (Hoodies? Ripped jeans? YES, PLEASE!), they call teachers by their first names (WHAT?!), and sometimes, they even EAT in class. If I tried that in Sri Lanka, I’d be doomed.

The WEIRD  and the WOW

- School starts at 8 AM or later!  Back in Sri Lanka, I had to wake up at an ungodly hour for school at 6:00AM sharp. Now, I get to sleep in. IT’S A DREAM.

- No exams until the higher grades – WHAT?! At Gateway, we had exams ALL THE TIME. Here, people seem way too relaxed about tests. I’m still paranoid about getting a surprise one.

- Everyone bikes to school – In Sri Lanka, we took the school van or got dropped off. Here, kids just hop on a bicycle and ride off like it’s a movie. I tried it once. Let’s just say… I need more practice.

- No school canteen?! WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO GET MY EGG ROLLS?! In Germany, you have to bring your own food, and the sandwiches are so… plain.

What I Actually Love About It

Even though I miss Gateway College and my friends, there are some pretty cool things about my new German school. Teachers encourage students to think for themselves (instead of just memorizing stuff), I have way more free time, and the best part? SNOW IN WINTER! No more melting under the sun during P.E.

Would I trade my new school for Gateway College? Hmm… I MISS THE FOOD, but honestly, I think I’m starting to love this crazy, relaxed, and sometimes confusing German school life. Now, if only I could convince them to start selling egg rolls…

That was it for today. I would like to know about the opinions of my foreign friends in Germany and share some tips about how they adjusted to life in Germany. I hope you guys would give me a like and comment. Enjoy…..
